Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes) (25 Marks)
The paper consists of four general questions. In response to one question students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course. (30 marks)
Know, understand and interpret
The essay on two works requires students to show their knowledge and understanding of the works and interpret their implications, and their similarities and differences, in connection with a given focus.
Analyse
Students are required to write a comparative analysis and evaluation of two of the works studied in terms of the demands of a given question.
Organise
Students are required to write a formal essay which is well-organized, which offers a balanced comparison between two works, and which is clearly focused on a given question.
Language
• How clear, varied and accurate is the language?
• How appropriate is the choice of register and style? (“Register” refers, in this context, to the candidate’s use of elements such as vocabulary, tone, sentence structure and terminology appropriate to the essay).
